Sony has announced that they are phasing out the current 40gb ps3 console and replacing it with a larger capacity 80gb model, but that’s not all, as the dual shock three wireless ps3 controller will also be in the package replacing the old wireless controller with no vibration function. The 80gb ps3 is due for launch across the whole of Europe on the 27th august 2008, no ps3 bundle deals have been announced yet but are expected to be released between mid September and mid December 2008 at various prices. Talking of prices there will be no change up or down in price and the RRP of the 80gb stays at £299, so you are getting an extra 40gb of space for free! What about backwards compatibility (BC)? Well as with the 40gb there will be no backwards compatibility, the 80gb ps3 is basically the same model but with a bigger hard drive, but in my opinion there is no need for BC, the forums are full of people moaning that they want BC, but I have owned my ps3 for over 8 months now and haven’t even looked at my ps2 collection, the ps3 games make the ps2 games look stone age, and if you have ps2 games then I assume you have a ps2 anyway, so if it bothers you that much just plug in your ps2!
Even though they haven’t announced any bundles I would expect to see MGS4 bundles with it at launch or some time very soon, as the launch of MGS4 has helped Sony sell so many consoles recently, and even if Sony don’t bundle it, you can guarantee that the big retailers will bundle MGS4 and other games to compete in such a competitive market place.
There is other good news, the platinum games series has been launched on the 1st august 2008, which price older games moving onto the platinum series at an RRP of £19.99, some of the games include; uncharted: drakes fortune, heavenly sword, resistance fall of man and ratchet and clank: tools of destruction. This represents serious value for money as only last month the RRP on these games were still £49.99, it should enable someone on a tighter budget to build a better collection without breaking the bank!
Although I am happy with the announcement, there are a couple of improvements I would have made, instead of a 80gb hard drive, I would have went for the 120gb hard drive instead, the difference in price between the 80gb and 120gb as separate items is only a couple of pound, and it would have brought it in line with the Xbox 360 elite’s 120gb hard drive. Also I would of liked to see a headset bundled with the console as most people these days buy the ps3 for online gaming, and a headset is a must have! Maybe next time Sony. All in all there has never been a better time to buy a ps3, you get a 80gb hard drive, dual shock controllers and some games are now under £20, good luck everyone!
