I have played this game for about 12 hours now and i have to say i am
truly addicted to it, it is an amazing game. At first i hated GTA 4 (for
about 4 hours) because i was bored as you start off with no weapons
and you have to earn them, but as you progress you start to pick up
weapons and the missions get better and better, you will fall in love
with this game. It is all based around "Niko Belic" an east European, ex
army hard nut, who comes to liberty city to see his cousin "Roman" in
the hope he can escape his past, there are other reasons he has
come to liberty city that unravel as the game progresses, but i don't
want to give too much away.
You basically start with nothing and work your way up working for the
criminal underworld, as usual in the GTA series. Where this one differs
is that you actually care about the character (Niko) more, he is more
realistic, witty and believable as a main character.
The graphics are stunning (take a look at the screen shots on the left)
and when it is daylight you will be blown away, and at night in a well lit
area with loads of neons it looks amazing, the only concern i have is
that when it is dark and you are in shadows you can't really see
anything and it is hard to see your character, i played this on a 40"
1080p samsung LCD TV which is renowned for it's black detail, and yet
i still struggled to make things out properly, but thats the only problem i
have with the game and i can easily live with it.
When playing the game it is a lot like watching a anim movie as you
move from mission to mission and this is what gets you hooked, you
are itching to find out what happens next to "Niko". This has a
downside for me as i haven't explored the city yet as i am trying to
complete each mission to find out what happens next, i haven't even
scratched the surface on what the city has to offer. But i am going to set
a couple of hours aside to go and have some fun and have a good look
around soon.
It is also a lot easier to play this game now without using any cheats, if
you use cheats then the game will have a completely different ending
it's not worth it and you don't need them, by all means if want to have a
play and waste some cops or innocent civilians, use the cheats but
don't save the game! It is easier not to use the cheats as when you get
arrested or put in hospital you don't lose your weapons like in previous
GTA's, you can also put your health back to normal by buying a burger
or hot dog, it is best to do this before starting any mission so you have
full health. You also have to make choices throughout the game as to
who lives and who dies, which effects the ending, a nice touch i think!
Another new feature is the taxi service, no longer do you have to drive
from mission to mission or to your safe house etc... Just whistle for a
cab jump in and select your destination, you can then choose to either
sit back and enjoy the ride, speed the cab up or skip and instantly
arrive at your destination, you also get a text message when you fail a
mission and have the option to restart the mission, this makes the
game a lot quicker and less frustrating when you fail a mission, you
can be at the start of a mission again after failing in about 30 seconds,
this for me is probably the best feature in the game.
Beware of the arcade games lurking around, i started playing one the
other night, it was a bit like tetris but in 3D, and i got hooked, by the
time i looked back up at the time i had wasted 40 minutes of my life on
it with out even noticing, i could have done another couple of missions
in that time! Apart from that game i haven't really done anything else
like that apart from bowling, which is one of the missions at the start
and is pretty entertaining, you can use the SIX-AXIS to control it which
can be fun.
You can also choose to use the SIX-AXIS to control all the vehicles if
you want to, but i can't get the hang of using them for motorbikes, i just
end up eating dirt, but is good for helicopters and making cars do flips
in mid air.
This is an amazing game and well worth the £40 price tag and will
keep you entertained for months, due to the online side (which i haven't
played yet!) and my advice is buy it, you won't be disappointed.
I will add a online game play review soon and the cheats will be added
shortly so check back soon!
